Dementia & Alzheimer’s Care Home Kildare

Dementia is a collective term used to describe various symptoms of cognitive decline; such as forgetfulness, personality changes, deterioration in social skills and impaired reasoning.  It is a symptom of several underlying diseases and brain disorders, including Alzheimer’s Disease which accounts for more than half of dementia cases.

The Boyne & Barrow Suite is our dedicated unit for residents with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. This dedicated dementia unit leads directly into our Reminiscence Town, a safe and secure remodelled street with old Irish signage, shop fronts and seating.

This area of our home provides a safe and secure place to sit and relax whilst reminiscing days gone by. Our Boyne & Barrow residents also have full access to all of the other facilities of the Home.

Our dementia unit has been designed to be dementia friendly and we have followed international best practice in the design, layout and fittings used in the unit.

Dementia & Alzheimers Care Services

Our dementia services are designed to be person-centred and life-affirming. A person’s dementia journey can last many years and we support our residents in attaining the most enjoyment and meaningful experience they can achieve on a supported basis. We endeavour to provide person-centred care that sees past the veil of dementia, which can be frightening and confusing for residents at times, particularly when their home environment has changed.  This requires great patience, empathy and interest on the part of our staff and all of our care staff are specially trained and recruited for these particular qualities.

Dementia Care Plan

Prior to and upon admission, we will devise a Care Plan with the individual and their family and carers to really get to know them and what makes them who they are and to understand where they are coming from. Our dementia care plans are constantly monitored and evaluated to help us provide the best care and support possible.

Many of our dementia residents have very strong attachments to certain items and belongings and we encourage, where possible and safe to do so, that such items come with our dementia residents to their new home e.g. family photos, special teddy bears, CDs, trophies, blankets, amongst other personal effects.

Should you wish to discuss Long Term Dementia Care options with us we would be delighted to help. Please call the Bed Manager for further information.
